Tough Times Don't Last. Tough People Do.
JOSH HOLLADAY
May 8, 2024 | Issue #25 | Read Online
Dear readers,
I'm going to give this one to you short, and straight. (or at least the "Josh Verbose Holladay" brief version.)
Here we go. Consider the following:
"Learn how to outlast the tough times, and you're golden baby."
-Josh
Weather the storms. Keep going. Don't give up. Finish the race.
These statements all mean about the same thing.
But, they are just words on the internet...totally worthless. They mean nothing...
...until...
...you do something with them.
So, let's just examine this idea presented here in this issue today. That is, being tough through the tough times.
Let's walk away with some action items.
That's the good stuff.
Tough Times
Listen, we all have tough times. I've had my fair share. And, because I care about you and because I know that being vulnerable is healing and helpful, here are just a few of the things I've gone through.
- My dad went through two divorces before I graduated high school.
- I was diagnosed with Bipolar at age 23.
- In 2006, I filed for bankruptcy due to overspending during my pre-diagnosis of bipolar.
- I'm colorblind, (no really, it's not fun sometimes.)
- I had to tell someone that their spouse was unfaithful.
- I've been broke...in debt...fired...suicidal...hopeless...frail...and accused of things I didn't do before.
- Oh, and I have seven (amazing) kids to father and feed and fend for.
We all go through tough times. I know people who have had it way, way worse than I have, and some of those people are probably you. I specifically know a few of our subscribers here...
- Who has suffered a death of a close relative
- Who are divorced
- Who was only able to have one child
- Who failed in more than one entrepreneurial pursuit
- Who died, then was revived
- Who left New Zealand with basically nothing was not allowed to legally get a job, but still "made it happen." (hero material)
Oh, how the list could grow to an endless length. But, the point is, tough times, challenges, struggles, they come...
...But, They Also Go. They Fade Away Eventually.
You know, when I think of this concept, the word HOPE comes to mind.
(Wrote a song I titled "HOPE" years ago. Have a listen.)
That's all we need, isn't it?!
The hope that brighter days are ahead.
That just taking things one step at a time is enough...like cancer treatment.
But, boy, it doesn't feel like that when you're in the thick of it.
It's painful, so painful sometimes. (You are all so brave for trudging forward.)
But, you don't spend forever at the dentist, now do you?!
So, you go back twice a year and literally just "grin and bear it."
Years ago I learned that when I hurt myself, I just need to wait, breath, and process the pain.
It's like this last week, I stepped into the shower (pardon the example) and my big toe on my left foot hit the side of the shower.
Wow! Yow!
But, as a habit, I just wait because I know the pain is temporary and it goes away quicker than I always expect.
Life will get better. (Toes will stop smarting.)
And, we'll move forward till the next moment when we have to flex and show our true colors through the tough times.
The Tough People Type
So what's it take to be a "tough people?" What's it take to keep hanging on...no...to thrive gloriously through it all?!
Well, we could probably all cram into a conference room, assign a leader and hand them a white board marker to scribble out dozens of answers while we spout them off, machine gun like.
But, here, let's make this a useful exercise, shall we?!
I'd like to submit to you just three:
- Thrive With The End In Mind - Steven R. Covey
- Focus On Others More Than Yourself - Jesus Christ (paraphrased)
- Keep A Gratitude Journal - The Life Coach Community++...etc.
During your week, write 3 things you're grateful for. Look for what you can learn from "the hard time" you might be in. And go and serve...just get out of your house, walk out of your front door...go find someone to visit...or call.
Remember, you can move mountains because you have toughed some pretty hard times.
Believe you are strong.
To your bright future and continued success.

6 Step Miracle Method (pg 36) Think & Grow Rich
- Fix in your mind the exact thing you want and desire.
- Determine exactly what you will give to get this thing.
- Establish a date when you intend to posses or achieve this thing.
- Create a definite plan for obtaining this thing and begin at once to execute this plan, even before you feel ready.
- Write out a clear and concise statement of the thing you intend to acquire, name the time limit, state what you will give in return for this thing and describe the plan in detail that you will execute to obtain this thing.
- Read this written statement aloud every morning and every night. See and feel yourself already in possession of the thing that you desire.
