The Magic of Being Free
How to achieve freedom in 3 core areas of your life.
JOSH HOLLADAY
July 4, 2024 | Issue #32 | Read Online
Dear Readers,
It's difficult to imagine what it was like back then.
When America was young and ambitions were tall.
Freedom.
Liberty.
Justice.
That's all they wanted.
It took a painful and miracle filled Revolution to get them there.
But, somehow...
I think, as a people, we're still pushing for freedom...
...every day.
I think it's still the ambition of the American people today to have the capacity to live a life according on their own terms.
Here are three aspects of freedom that you can be striving for.
Freedom of Conscience
As I considered how this issue would go, I thought about where to start.
I think I found the perfect place.
It is...
...to examine for a moment that all too poignant relationship with ourselves.
You know, I've learned, that no one is perfect.
And if self destructing thoughts are telling you that you are anything less than perfect the way you are now, your worth, the way you keep going, the way you try your best...
...then, you may need to check that voice at the door and tell them never to return.
You're busy...indefinitely.
I once heard a quote by Art Williams:
"All you can do is all you can do."
Period.
We find Freedom of Conscience when we:
- Accept ourselves for who we are. Our personalities are different than others and we all have strengths, and opportunities to team up with others to leverage where they are strong, or to grow in our strengths.
- Have patience in the process. Buffer. Ever heard of it? We use it in planning software projects, basically, hedging against unforeseen happenings. It's best to plan for these and be realistic.
- Accept ALL of the responsibility. You blame, you give away the power to control whatever it is you're trying to avoid. Take it, then make it better.
There are no shortcuts in life where true meaning is concerned.
We are all preparing the soil, planting and harvesting.
The last thing you need is a devil on your shoulder feeding you lies.
You're great. You're powerful. You're wonderful. Act like it.
"Be grateful, most of all of who you are and what you have. We have one life and we can make it beautiful. We can fill it will love for ourselves and love and service to others."
Financial Freedom
What is spending money brought happiness, joy, and satisfaction?
What if paying your mortgage or rent, paying your car insurance, giving to charity was part of your mental therapy for feeling like you were contributing in the world?
What if...when you heard, saw, wrote, or said the word "money" you DIDN'T have a lump in your gut immediately form and grow till you changed the subject?
Is this really how we were meant to live?
Freedom of Conscience comes, partly, from being financial stable. You know you are doing alright because you've got the bills paid and food on the table.
But, what if the minimum for you, the minimum standard is not to be "barely making it," but to have 6 months saved up in the bank...
...or, to have a couple of investment properties?!
Raise your minimum standard? How does that sound?
For some, the GAME OF MONEY has been a losing and painful game for decades.
For others, the ones that seem to have risen above the game and have jumped into a new game, it seems as if life is filled with endless bliss because money ISN'T a constant source of...I don't know...ulcers?!
Consider the following about the way of money, then see if you can move the needle 1% in the direction of more, freedom of conscience.
Deal?!
- Money only fixes money problems. I built a house 3 years ago. Am I any happier now than I was before. No. You see, money is tied to stress, that's surely a big one. But, if we can't learn to manage $1,000 when it comes into our hands, how can we learn to manage $100,000?
- You can't get ahead until you know how money works. How does money work? Taxes...how does that all work? Interest? What's "one dollar in, two dollars out" have to do with anything? What if you were to gain $30,000 from the death of a "rich uncle," what would you do with it? What kind of investment instrument could you use to get a 1.5X return, (150%) return which would be $45,000, and how long would it take. These are important things. What's your next step to learn more about how money works? Try YouTube but focus on Financial Literacy and maybe not "Side-Hustles" right now. (Robert Kiyosaki...)
- Money is not bad, it's not good, it's AWESOME! Hey, isn't it fun to go on vacation?! Isn't it fun to go out to lunch with your family...or meet up with a friend?! Let me ask this in a different way. Is it wrong to spend money on a vacation, to have lunch with your family, or to buy your friend a burger? It's only "irresponsible" if you can't afford it or if "that not a priority" because you've got other obligations. Listen, fix your relationship with money and things might just go a little different. I once heard a story about a man on stage and here's how it went:
"He stood up on the stage, pulled out numerous 100 dollar bills, fanned them out in front of his face then started kissing the dollars repeating, "I love money. I love money..." He did this for a 30 seconds then asked the people in the audience what kinds of emotions and thoughts they were having. Which, the consensus of the audience express negative connotations. Then, he told them why he loves money so much. This is what he said. He stated that, he loves his grandson. That he adores his grandson. But, that his grandson lives several states away. Money allows him to fly on a plane weekly to visit his grandson, thereby, sustaining and vital relationship with his loved ones.
You see, money isn't bad. Even the love of money isn't bad. It's being consumed by money or not having money set in the right order or place in life that can be destructive.
So, have fun with it.
Make the world a better place and improve yourself in the process.
Time Freedom
Time. It's an interesting concept.
For one, time really isn't real.
I mean, it only exists because Earth rotates and laps around the Sun.
That' it.
But, it also does exist because our world and it's "human momentum framework" is built on days...hours...and minutes.
No biggy, right?!
You can work with that.
Well, you have no choice.
But, one thing I read about last year from the book, "The Big Leap" by Gay Hendricks is that...
...we are the makers of our own time. WE make time for this. WE make time for that. WE control everything about our time. If you got up one day and didn't want to go to work, you could stay home. NO ONE is making you go to work, or pay your bills, or do anything you don't want to. But, it's consequences that we can't avoid and that is, sometimes, why we feel like we HAVE TO do things.
When you have Freedom of Conscience...when you have Financial Freedom, (which, by the way, is the freedom to be and do what you want to do and be, any...TIME...you want to do it), you develop a Time Freedom you never knew you could have.
Leverage is a wonderful word and you can create "time leverage" to explore, expand, and experience.
Final Thoughts
Where is your heart right now? Are you wanting more out of life?
You can have more. There's just an order to making it happen.
I believe that you and I are capable to moving into our next phase of happiness, success, and joy.
Let's try.
Let's be.
Let's go and do the things to, as I like to say, "move the need."
...one step at a time.
To your continued growth and bright future,
--Josh
